Introduction to Composting

Composting is a cost-effective way to make a difference in your home. It's a quick and fun task to do, with the potential of changing our planet for the better. Here are some ways composting can help your everyday life and the globe.

Environmental changes

When you compost, you reduce the volume of materials that may otherwise be taken into landfills or trash incinerators. By reducing the amount of pollution that ends up in the environment, we can cut the amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere. In your home, you can use your compost to build healthier soil for your garden. By doing this, you're contributing to the global effort of making our planet greener!

Saving money

When you decide to compost you can save money on items you'd typically find going for $10 or more in a store for free instead! If you have a garden with fruits and vegetables and you decide to start composting today, you can get better quality produce in your garden just by recycling food scraps from your kitchen. It's like going to the store and getting fruits with a 100% discount.

Time usage

Composting is not time-consuming whatsoever, in fact, the time it's taken you to read up to here would be enough time for you to start a composter and put a few unnecessary items into it. When you return home after a long day at work, it may seem exhausting to begin composting. But really, all you need to do is set up a composter near your trashcan and remember to put any items that can compost inside. It's just as easy as throwing away items in your trashcan!

How to do composting for yourself

After going over all the reasons you should compost, we'll explain how you can do it at home. When first starting a composter, you must find a suitable location. Typically, you'll want a sunny, dry, flat, and well-drained area. Then, find a container like an old crate or bin for your compost. Next, place some twigs into the container followed by leaves. Creating a brown to green matter base (letting any compost you put in have easy drainage and airflow).

After setting up the composter fully, you must maintain it every couple of weeks by ensuring it is damp and mixing it with water if it is dry, which takes only a few minutes at most and consumes none of your precious time. Finally, you are ready to start composting and putting used banana peels or eggshells as you please into your composter. While it may appear to be a small effort, composting is a huge help to yourself and your environment.
